Edmund G. Ross is said to have saved the President Andrew Johnson's presidency. He voted for acquittal along with six other Republicans in the impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson. The time was after the Civil War, when the Radical Republicans wanted the southern congressmen who voted for secession out. Ross was the only congressman from the south to vote against secession before the Civil War. The Congress and the President were at each others throats. The President would propose a bill and it would be vetoed by the Congress; and he Congress would propose a bill and it would be vetoed by Johnson. Essentially, nothing was getting done. Congress decided it was time to impeach Johnson. This was a wrongful impeachment. Johnson did not do anything unconstitutional, congress just simply did not like him. Only few saw it like that though. Edmund G. Ross was one of the few to see it clearly. He, along with six other congressmen, voted for acquittal for the president. As a result, Johnson's presidency was saved. Had it not been for this courageous man, Johnson would have been out of a job and the country would have more drama over changing the president. Ross saved the country a whole lot of trouble with his vote.
