Lucius Lamar was a political opponent to Charles Sumner before Sumner passed away. But nevertheless Lamar delivered a eulogy to the senate about how lamentable his death was. Lamar was trying to mend relations between the North and the South post Civil War. This speech was greatly appreciated by the Senate, both North and South and definitely helped bring the two sides to terms. Throughout his career Lamar was a great speaker and delivered many speeches like this trying to get the North and South to mend their differences and become one united force again.
